ABOUT JOLLY COMEDY CLUB – THE STORY SO FAR…
Jolly Comedy was born in January 2011 in Worthing, West Sussex.
Jo Public, a Worthing based, stand up comedian and compere decided against advice to start a comedy night based in Worthing as opposed to the busy city of Brighton, some 15 miles up the road. Brighton has long been a hub of stand up comedy nights in the South, both big and small and so was seen as the obvious place to start a new comedy night. However, Jo felt strongly that there was no reason why a decent comedy night could not thrive in Worthing.
“Why shouldn’t the people of Worthing have a great, local, comedy night on their doorsteps? Why should Worthing residents have to pay over the odds to travel into Brighton for a decent comedy show?”
With this thought Jo started the JOLLY COMEDY CLUB in the downstairs room of The Charles Dickens, a large pub in Heene Road, Worthing. The first night at the end of January 2011 was well supported with around 80 audience members made up of family, friends and local residents and was a great success. The comedy night ran every last Friday of the month for the whole of 2011 & 2012. Throughout this time, Jo worked relentlessly to promote the night and get a good audience in and kept the ticket price down to a very reasonable £5 to encourage this.
” The first two years were tough as people in Worthing just weren’t used to having a regular comedy night and also it was hard to get the word out there, especially as local press refused to come and review the night and the cost of paid advertising was completely out of reach. I basically funded the night out of my own pocket, made no money and was doing it for love and the conviction that it would become self funding in time. I promoted the night via facebook page, posters in the pub and also going out on the sea front, talking to people and handing out flyers. ”
In spite of the difficulties, Jolly Comedy’s popularity grew, with satisfied customers spreading the word about the great night of comedy they had enjoyed. A mailing list was also set up to inform interested, regular customers about the up coming events.
In January 2013, Jo had to undergo a major operation and so had to cancel Jolly Comedy Club for four months. With time to reflect a few changes were put in place. The low ticket price was raised from £5 to £6 advance and £7 on the door, still a very reasonable price to pay for a full night of quality, live entertainment. Although audience numbers had been growing throughout 2012, a trend was noted that one month would be a sell out but the following month numbers would dip down. It was decided that doing a show once every two months was the answer as its not always possible for customers to come religiously every month. By reducing the amount of shows, the less is more theory came into play, with customers keeping the date free in order to attend. The first show back in April was a roaring sell out success, with a packed to bursting room and some unlucky people having to be sent away as the health and safety limit was reached.
The small increase in ticket price and boosted audience numbers has meant it is possible to book even better acts for the Jolly audience to enjoy with the happy result of fantastic nights of comedy for all. Jolly Comedy is very much a local, family run concern with Jo’s Mum Irene and Jo’s partner on the door. The atmosphere is of friendly, fun and regular audience members feel a real part of the club. It is also gaining an excellent reputation with comedians who regularly ask to perform here as they have heard what a fun night it is and how fantastic the Worthing audience are.
2014 looks set to be a great year for Jolly Comedy Club with dates set for the Charles Dickens and due to the success, some new venues are in the pipeline. Watch this space for more Jolly Comedy Clubs coming soon.
